A pair of Victorian silver-gilt covered vases, possibly for spice or chestnuts, each with two finely chased handles in the form of Pan masks, with fluted shoulders and egg and dart rims, a band of acanthus arabesques within rope and beaded guilloche-scroll borders, a lower moulded band flanked by leaves and fluting on a square base, the leaf embossed covers with acanthus borders and bud finials.
London 1874 by Stephen Smith.
36cm high overall (14 in),
3715g gross (119.5 oz),
and a mahogany carrying case with retailers label.
Provenence; Walter A. McCreery, Bilton Park, Rugby, died 1922. General Sir Richard L. McCreery, G.C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., Stowell Hill, Templecombe, Somerset, died 1967. Thence by descent.
